McDonnell talks with Obama, approves disaster assistance for Pulaski tornadoes

President Obama called Gov. Bob McDonnell Thursday to discuss the deadly storms that ripped across Virginia Wednesday and Thursday, according to McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin.

The president expressed his “personal sadness” over the loss of life and property resulting from the storms that have hit the state, and noted that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano would work with the state regarding federal assistance for the recovery effort, according to Martin.

“The Governor greatly appreciated the president’s call and his sincere concern for the people of Virginia,” Martin said.

McDonnell, who has been coordinating the state response to the storm and is receiving constant updates from state agencies, will travel to Washington County Friday to assess the damage firsthand.

The governor also on Thursday approved up to $679,050 in state disaster assistance for Washington County and local governments of Pulaski County to help with the recovery from April 8 tornadoes.
