New Home: Baltimore County couple builds home from scratch

Deborah Lacy and her husband Antonio were excited about building a new home from scratch, so everything would be exactly how they wanted it. The only question was, where?

They ended up buying practically in their own backyard. The Lacys chose Cedar Lane Farms, a new community of 56 three- to five-bedroom homes in Baltimore County, just seven miles from their Overly home.

“We liked the location, the convenience, and the accessibility to the Beltway,” Deborah Lacy said. “We loved the floor plan because both my husband and I have large families, and we entertain a lot. We like to have them over for cookouts. We like the rec room in the basement, so people won?t be cluttered. It?s entertainment-friendly.”

The two-story colonial homes are built on lots ranging from one-fifth to one-quarter of an acre and can have anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 bathrooms. Included are features like gas fireplaces, 9-foot ceilings, 42-inch-high cabinets and hardwood floors in the foyer. There are fully sodded yards, ceramic in the master bathrooms, kitchen islands and two-car garages.

Available options include stone or brick fronts, morning rooms, sunrooms, kitchen upgrades and finished basements. Square footage ranges from 1,958- to 3,281-square-feet.

“One of the great things about how the homes are designed is that they?re [specifically] for Cedar Lane Farms,” said Jenell Forman, sales manager for Ryland Homes, headquartered in Calabasas, Calif. “We designed homes here where the garage is diminished and pushed back, almost like in older times. Even some of the architectural elements take you back to homes built 100 years ago ? overlooks, little circle windows, peaks. They?re very, very stately on the outside, unlike what most new homes look like, but on the inside you have everything up-to-date, very open, bright, and airy, which is a design motif of Ryland.”

The neighborhood was built on the site of an old golf driving range, a large area completely surrounded by mature trees.

Located in the Rosedale area, the development is just a few minutes from all the shopping options of White Marsh.

“We have a lot of people who are considering our community because within two minutes you can be going three different ways,” Forman said. “Even driving to the mall you will pass by farms, which is kind of neat.”

The Lacys already were intimately familiar with the area, perhaps no one more so than Deborah.

“I?m always at White Marsh Mall,” she said.
