Things didn?t go well for the Ravens this season ? and the bad news continued Tuesday for one of the team?s biggest fans. Baltimore County Circuit Judge Mickey Norman had harsh words for Ron Stach, 41, Baltimore?s self-proclaimed “Goof on the roof,” who camped out atop a Canton bar supporting his football team for several days in December until he was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to pay $43,000 in child support over 18 years.
“This has gone on too long,” Norman told Stach, whom the judge ordered to pay $750 or remain in the Baltimore County Detention Center for one year. “You need to get a grip. You need to stop making excuses.”
Stach has failed to make his $50 weekly child support payments for his son Joshua for 18 years, his ex-wife Kelly Stach, 37, said after Tuesday?s hearing.
During the football season, Ron Stach camped out on the roof of a Canton bar until the Ravens broke their losing streak, had made numerous television and newspaper appearances publicizing his protest, including in The Examiner.
All the while, as the beer flowed, and cameras rolled ? the child support payments continued to go unpaid, said Kelly Stach, a Dundalk resident.
Finally, Kelly Stach called the police, who arrested her ex-husband.
“What kind of an idiot goes on TV with an outstanding warrant?” she asked outside the courtroom Tuesday. “He says he?s depressed, but it looked like he was happy drinking all the beer he wanted.”
At the hearing, Ron Stach promised the judge he would straighten up his act, but his ex-wife doesn?t believe him ? and wants to see tougher restrictions forcing him to pay up.
“He?s always been irresponsible, but Maryland?s laws aren?t tough enough on child support violators,” she said. “Judge Norman wants to do the right thing, but his hands are tied.”
