The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team will receive an invitation to the White House after winning the NCAA championship in April, the office of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said.
Haley’s office told the Post and Courier the champion basketball team should expect an invitation in the fall.
Head coach Dawn Staley, a friend of Haley’s, said several months ago she would visit the White House if invited, but the team never received an invitation.
On Friday, Staley told the Associated Press she was unsure whether the team would visit because of “some things [that] transpired over the last few months.”
“We haven’t gotten an invitation yet, and that in itself speaks volumes,” Staley said. “We won before those other teams won their championships. I don’t know what else has to happen.”
