2020 candidate compares using taxpayer money for abortions to funding the military

Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton criticized people who say they support abortion but do not want their tax dollars to fund them. He compared the position to supporting the U.S. military but not wanting to fund it.

The Massachusetts congressman called out fellow 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden for not supporting repealing the Hyde Amendment, where federal money is not allowed to be used to fund abortions “except where the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term.”

“I think he should change his position. I think it’s wrong. It disproportionately attacks women who don’t have the private means to afford an abortion. And it’s sort of like saying, ‘I support the troops, but I don’t want to pay them.’ That’s the analogy here, and I think it’s wrong,” Moulton said.

Moulton said Biden’s position highlights the need for new leadership within the Democratic Party.

CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota said public opinion agrees with Biden’s stance on abortion.

“Leadership is not following the polls. It’s changing public opinion to do the right thing. That’s what leadership is all about, and that’s we should expect of our next president,” Moulton said.

Biden is currently the front-runner in the Democratic primary, which has over 20 candidates. RealClearPolitics show Biden’s average polling is at 33.5%. Moulton and California Rep. Eric Swalwell, are polling is at 0%.
