Actor John Krasinski, who plays a CIA analyst in “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” said he was shocked to discover how “apolitical” the CIA is.
Krasinski visited the intelligence agency and consulted with an ex-CIA officer while preparing for the role in the Amazon series.
“I was blown away by a lot of things with the CIA — how incredibly diverse the place was and how apolitical. There was no politics being discussed, it was about objectives of protecting people and getting to the truth of the matter, which I thought was really interesting,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
“It wasn’t one thousand Arnold Schwarzeneggers out there fighting the world for us. It was really these people who, like Jack, have been in other jobs and just decided, ‘I want to do more for my country.’ It was an unbelievable place and I feel so lucky to be representing them,” he added.
Krasinski’s comments could be seen as a response to President Trump’s assertions of politicization within the U.S. intelligence community in regards to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. Intelligence agencies have faced repeated public attacks from Trump over their determination that the Kremlin interfered. Trump’s comments during and after a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin added to the confusion about whether Trump believes his own intelligence community’s assessment.
