Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday called on Donald Trump Jr. to testify under oath and in public about the meetings he had with a Russian lawyer, after he released emails showing he was told about the Russian government’s support of President Trump’s campaign last year.
“We need public testimony under oath of Donald Trump Jr., who has changed his story repeatedly,” the New York Democrat told reporters.
“The emails are the end of the idea pushed by the administration and the president that there is absolutely no evidence of intent to coordinate or collude,” Schumer said. “It’s not incumbent on the special prosecutor, the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary Committees to continue their investigations.”
Schumer also called on Trump Jr., along with other members of the campaign, to turn over “all documents and electronic communications” that investigators ask for and that the House vote in favor of the Russia sanctions bill the Senate passed by a 98-2 margin.
The New York Democrat’s calls came after Trump Jr. released email correspondence between him and Rob Goldstone, who set up the meeting between him and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. Goldstone indicated in the email that she had ties to the Kremlin.
In the email, Goldstone told Trump Jr. that Veselnitskaya had information that could be damaging to Hillary Clinton’s campaign, to which Trump Jr. responded, “I love it.” He went on to sit down with her in a meeting that included Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, then Trump’s campaign chairman.
Trump Jr. initially told the New York Times that the meeting was about Russian adoption, before telling them otherwise in subsequent statements.
