IRS takes to Instagram with piggy bank photos and savings tips

The Internal Revenue Service, the government entity that collects taxes and ensure those who don’t pay them, well, pay, has joined Instagram.

The 156-year-old entity, under its verified handle @irsnews, has posted in Spanish and English on the image-based social media network. The account has so far alerted users to changes in tax code and offered reminders about upcoming tax-centric dates using either simple graphics or moving images.

So far, the service has posted 15 times, garnering more than 4,000 followers but following no other users.

Other government agencies, including the National Park Service and many of the individual national parks, also have Instagram accounts. The National Parks Service posts photos that capture natural beauty of the United States, while NASA’s posts include photos and videos of the cosmos far beyond the bonds of Earth.

The IRS is no stranger to recent forays into social media, with a 100,000-follower strong Twitter account. The service was also the target of concentrated reports in November from Snapchat users who began a social media campaign #ThotAudit to report possible tax evasion by sex workers and individuals producing pornography and selling it via “premium Snaps.”

The IRS did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its Instagram account.
