Arrest made in connection to Delphi, Indiana, teenage murders five years later

A suspect appeared in Indiana court Friday morning in connection to the murders of two teenage girls from five years ago.

Police reportedly arrested the unidentified subject with plans to make a statement on the arrest Monday. The suspect is allegedly connected to the 2017 murders of Abby Williams, 13, and Libby German, 14, but it is unclear if this person is the man that Indiana State Police posted a sketch of.

Ever since the sketch has been released, many online have attempted to connect the sketch to suspects by posting pictures side-by-side. It led to the Carroll County Sheriff’s office issuing a warning on social media that it was “ruining innocent people’s lives.” The over-involved public could be the reason the police are slowly bringing attention to the situation. Over 50,000 phone and email tips have been reported.

“Before posting a side by side, imagine that is your son, brother, or father,” the post read. “If you have a tip, we have given you the proper way to report it.”

Williams and German were found on Valentine’s Day in 2017 after being reported missing the day before. Their remains were abandoned in a remote part of the Delphi Historic Trail.

“Law enforcement officers distributed a photograph of a person observed on the Delphi Historic Trail. The photograph appears to depict a white male wearing blue jeans, a blue coat/jacket, and a hoodie,” the state police reported. “During the course of the investigation, preliminary evidence has led investigators to believe the person, in the distributed photograph, is a suspect in the investigation of the homicides of Abigail Williams and Liberty German.”

Police nationwide have struggled to solve murders. The FBI reported the homicide clearance rate dipped below 50% in 2020. The year Williams and German were killed, the clearance rate for murder and manslaughter was 61.6%.
