New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Ted Cruz’s refusal to endorse Republican nominee Donald Trump is further evidence of why conservatives in Congress do not like him.
“It was an awful, selfish speech by someone who tonight — through the words he said on that stage — showed everyone why he has richly earned the reputation he has on Capitol Hill,” Christie told NBC News’ Hallie Jackson in the moments after Cruz left the stage.
The Tea Party Texan had refused to back Trump following his departure from the race.
But when Trump invited Cruz to speak at the convention, conservatives were hopeful Cruz would come around and back the nominee, as he had pledged to do when he signed the Republican National Committee’s agreement last year.
Christie was among the first candidates to endorse Trump and has been rumored to be one of his top picks for attorney general if Trump wins in November.
