Three-minute interview: Marquita Renee Ntim

Ntim is a singer and musician from Alexandria with an album released earlier this year, “God’s Words Through Me.” A graduate of Shenandoah University who also gives private music lessons, Ntim can often be found performing at One Mind Presbyterian Church of Washington in Woodbridge.

How would you describe your album to someone who’s never listened to your music?

Most of the songs are originals, so it’s gospel but it’s more, I would call it contemporary. … I’m singing. My main instrument is viola.

When did you start getting involved in music?

I started early. Church and school, probably elementary school. … I’ve always had, just a natural gift for it. I’ve been involved in church orchestra and choir and school orchestra and choir.

What do you like about gospel music?

I guess the most important thing is the gospel message … I like the idea that it’s real. It talks about real experiences and relationships with the creator. And also, pretty much any style of music can be used for gospel music, whether it’s rock or jazz or hip-hop.

What do you think about the music scene in Alexandria and the D.C. area?

I think there’s a great opportunity to be heard here. … We have a lot of open-mic venues. … And you can definitely stay busy on the church scene. A lot of youth groups always come and invite me to participate. There’s plenty to do here.

How has living in Alexandria influenced your music?

I think I’ve received a really good music education.

Which do you prefer, singing or playing viola?

I like both. Of course singing … is a lot more convenient because we can carry it with us. … I think both just come naturally to me.
