‘South Dakota’s housing market is BOOMING’: Kristi Noem invites others to move to her state as real estate market flourishes

House sales in South Dakota are “booming,” and Gov. Kristi Noem is encouraging others to move to the state that “respects Freedom.”

“South Dakota’s housing market is BOOMING. Folks want to live, work, and play in a state that respects Freedom and values personal responsibility,” Noem tweeted Monday. “If you agree, we’d love to have you join us!”

Noem’s tweet was accompanied by a news story detailing how house sales have increased in the state due to people from around the country buying properties, most notably in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

The Black Hill Pioneer reported that homes are spending less time on the market, the average prices paid for homes have risen, and up to 30% fewer houses are up for sale because of the increase in demand.

“I heard the other day that there’s an agent that wrote up three offers where, basically, the client has never seen the property because they know the market is so hot,” said Larry Luetke, president of the Realtor Association of the Sioux Empire.

The South Dakota governor made waves earlier this year when she refused to implement lockdown measures at the height of the pandemic.

“Here in South Dakota, because we didn’t shut down our state, the recovery story is far stronger. According to the Minneapolis Federal Reserve, South Dakota had the fewest low-income job losses of any state in our region, and as of the end of June, we’d already recovered nearly all of those losses. Our weekly initial unemployment claims continue to drop,” Noem said in a statement in September.

She has also touted South Dakota’s shrinking unemployment rate after refusing lockdowns.

“South Dakota’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.8% in August. Our economy is quickly getting back to normal, and the future is very bright,” Noem said of August unemployment numbers.
