President Trump allegedly dodging federal income taxes for a decade before paying $750 in 2016 and 2017 exposes the differences between him and Joe Biden, according to the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee’s top spokeswoman.
“I think it contributes to this larger sense that we have from Donald Trump that he looks down on working people,” Biden representative Kate Bedingfield told CNN Sunday.
Bedingfield added, “It contributes to a sense that he has a very Park Avenue mentality. Joe Biden grew up in Scranton. His presidency is going to be about helping working families in this country.”
Biden, the two-term vice president, has repeatedly called for Trump to hand over his tax returns on the campaign trail.
Trump denied a New York Times report Sunday that he paid no federal income taxes in 10 of the last 15 years “largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.” The outlet also reported the president paid $750 in taxes in 2016 and during the first year of his administration.
Trump’s denial didn’t stop the Biden camp from seizing on the report, published days before the first presidential debate on Tuesday in Cleveland.
Biden’s team released “I Paid More in Taxes Than Donald Trump” stickers, retailing at $5 for a pack of two.
Bedingfield responded Sunday, too, to Biden comparing Trump to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. Biden made the comparison Saturday after he was asked by MSNBC about the president’s attempts to peg him as a socialist.
“His point was that you cannot trust what comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth. That’s a tragedy,” she said.
She continued, “I think the comparison between the two, between a president who cannot tell the truth, and somebody in Biden who has told the truth his entire career, who has been a champion for working people, again, I think that that comparison is going to be really, really self-evident on the stage on Tuesday night.”
