Gov. Terry McAuliffe, D-Va., believes Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton will flip her stance on the Trans Pacific Trade Partnership to support the deal if she wins the election.
McAuliffe, a longtime friend of the Clintons, told Politico Tuesday he thinks Clinton would support the trade deal, a move that would deeply anger Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and his supporters.
“I worry that if we don’t do TPP, at some point China’s going to break the rules — but Hillary understands this,” McAuliffe told Politico at the Democratic National Convention. “Once the election’s over, and we sit down on trade, people understand a couple things we want to fix on it but going forward we got to build a global economy.”
Clinton railed against the trade pact during the primary, possibly as a result of Sanders’ progressive challenge, moving her farther left.
McAuliffe said if Democrats win back the Senate in November, it would put the party in a good position to make reforms to TPP and pass them.
