Journalist Carl Bernstein said Sunday that former President Richard Nixon’s lies are nothing “compared to what we have seen from Donald Trump.”
“Trump lives and thrives in a fact-free environment. No president, including Richard Nixon, has been so ignorant of fact and disdains fact in the way that this president-elect does,” Bernstein said.
“Everything that he controverts, he doesn’t go to a fact-based argument. He goes to an emotional argument,” Bernstein continued, as part of a CNN panel. “What we have seen throughout the campaign is pathological disdain for the truth — you know, a kind of lying, an ease with lying, that we have not seen before.”
Bernstein, who cowrote a series of investigative stories on the Watergate scandal that eventually led to the resignation of Nixon, added that Trump’s “growing sense of authoritarianism” was cause for concern.
