Trump on women’s marches: I thought we just had an election

President Trump took to Twitter on Sunday morning to mock protesters who participated in women’s marches across the United States a day after his inauguration.

“Watched protests yesterday but was under the impression that we just had an election! Why didn’t these people vote? Celebs hurt cause badly,” he tweeted.

More than 1 million people in cities across the United States protested Trump on Saturday, according to CNN, which compiled official estimates from law enforcement agencies. That number does not include the hundreds of thousands of people who turned out for the Women’s March on Washington.

City officials in Washington estimated more than half a million attended the protest on the National Mall.

About two hours after his first tweet on the protests, Trump’s Twitter account took a softer tone on the marches.

“Peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy,” the tweet read. “Even if I don’t always agree, I recognize the rights of people to express their views.”

Before tweeting about the women’s march, Trump wrote that he had a “great meeting” at CIA headquarters on Saturday.

“Packed house, paid great respect to Wall, long standing ovations, amazing people,” he tweeted Sunday. “WIN!”
