Liz Cheney calls for ban on tourists in Capitol over coronavirus fears

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney wants to stop tourists from visiting the Capitol amid fears over the spread of coronavirus.

“We should take this step. Not doing so is putting health and safety of these tourists at risk,” the Wyoming Republican tweeted Wednesday.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said congressional leaders were considering the move but have been reluctant to shut down tourist access to the Capitol. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday shot down the possibility of closing the Capitol and sending lawmakers home during the outbreak.

Multiple members of Congress have self-quarantined after coming into contact with someone infected with the virus. Cheney skipped a Republican leadership retreated last weekend, saying she would “limit participation in non-essential gatherings.”

More than 1,000 cases have been confirmed in the United States as of Wednesday afternoon.
