‘I drive a Tesla’: Social media slams Colbert’s comments on gas prices

A clip of Late Show host Stephen Colbert proclaiming he’ll happily pay more for gas went viral, with Twitter users observing how seemingly removed he is from everyday people.

“Today, the average gas price in America hit an all-time record high of over $4 per gallon,” Colbert said Monday. “OK, that stings, but a clean conscience is worth a buck or two. It’s important. I’m willing to pay $4 a gallon. Hell, I’ll pay $15 a gallon, because I drive a Tesla.”

Comedian Tim Dillon critiqued Colbert’s comedic strategy in a tweet Tuesday. “This is precisely why late night liberal moralist garbage doesn’t work as comedy,” Dillon tweeted.

“You can’t have millionaires on TV telling people to suck it up and pay more for gas so they have a ‘clear conscience,’ on one war when we continue to finance several others the media never mentions.”

“‘Stop worrying about money!’ says guy who doesn’t have to worry about money,” YouTuber Pardes Seleh tweeted. “F*** these people.”

Journalist Glenn Greenwald crunched the numbers in his tweet. “Stephen Colbert — who earns $15 million per year from CBS and has a net worth approaching $100 million — says it’s worth it to endure higher gas prices so that you have a ‘clean conscience,'” he tweeted.

Young Americans for Liberty, an offshoot of Students for Ron Paul, also chimed in. “Out of touch doesn’t even begin to describe this,” the tweet read.

Former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Monica Crowley shared her thoughts also. “Your cultural elites have never been more condescending, snotty or out of touch,” Crowley tweeted.

Representatives for CBS did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
