Four of the Uighurs detained at Guantanamo are reportedly going to be transferred to Palau, a tiny island nation in the South Pacific. That leaves nine Uighurs who the Obama administration still has to relocate. Resolving the Uighurs’ cases was supposed to be easy, but it hasn’t turned out that way. The Obama administration initially considered relocating at least some of them to U.S. soil. That sparked outrage and so the administration quickly backed off that plan. Since then, the process of finding a home for all of the Uighur detainees has dragged on. The transfer of four Uighurs to Bermuda earlier this year even sparked a political firestorm. All the while, evidence of the Uighur detainees’ ties to al Qaeda has continued to grow. But the press, the Obama administration, and some Congressmen seem remarkably incurious. The NEFA Foundation has just released a two-part translation of an interview with Abdul Haq – the jihadist who leads the TIP (Turkistan Islamic Party). At least eight of the Uighurs who have been detained at Gitmo have openly admitted that Haq was their leader. The Uighur detainees’ defenders ignore this damning admission, however. There are even people like Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Bill Delahunt (D-MA) who pretend that the TIP is not a real terrorist organization allied with al Qaeda. They should read NEFA’s translation of Abdul Haq’s interview. Haq is clear about his ties to the Taliban and their Arab counterparts – that is, al Qaeda. Haq even talks about the glory of fighting alongside Taliban martyrs in their battles against the Northern Alliance:
There’s much more. Abdul Haq talks about his education in radical Islam, his desire to wage jihad, and makes sure to bless Osama bin Laden (“may Allah keep him safe”) when he mentions the terror master’s name. Abdul Haq is a senior al Qaeda terrorist. He sits on al Qaeda’s elite Shura council, according to the Obama administration’s own Treasury Department. And Haq is not bashful about his ties to the Taliban-al Qaeda axis. But, for some reason, there are a fair number of people who do not want us to worry at all about his trainees being released from Gitmo.
