Liz Cheney: Calling Jan. 6 a false flag is equivalent to 9/11 trutherism

Liz Cheney seemed to take a swipe at Fox News and Tucker Carlson when she claimed people speculating that Jan. 6 was a “false flag” are dangerous and “un-American.”

Republican Rep. Liz Cheney went on Fox News Sunday, participating in a panel about bipartisanship alongside Rep. James Clyburn. Fox News anchor Chris Wallace asked Cheney to address the growing number of Republicans who claim that the Jan. 6 insurrection was a setup.

“Congresswoman Cheney, there is talk now that Jan. 6 was a false flag operation,” Wallace asked the Wyoming representative. “That it was a case of liberals in the deep state setting up conservatives and Trump supporters. Is there any truth to that?”

“None at all,” Cheney replied. “It’s the same thing that you hear people saying 9/11 is an inside job. It’s un-American to be spreading those kinds of lies, and they are lies.”

Cheney went on to say that both Democrats and Republicans have an “obligation” to “understand every single piece of the facts about what happened that day” and to “hold the people accountable.”

Wallace’s query was sparked by Cheney’s ongoing conflict with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Carlson released the documentary Patriot Purge on Nov. 1, which puts forth the idea that the Jan. 6 insurrection was a false flag operation organized by the federal government.

“It appears that is giving a platform to spread the same type of lies that provoked violence on Jan. 6,” Cheney tweeted about the documentary on Oct. 28.

Cheney is currently one of two Republican representatives on the Jan. 6 committee.

She was previously ousted from party leadership through a congressional party vote. Cheney has consistently criticized former President Donald Trump and was one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach him after Jan. 6.
