Ehrlich to give funds to combat gangs

In one of his last acts in office, Gov. Robert Ehrlich authorized the spending of an additional $750,000 to support gang prevention, intervention and suppression initiatives throughout Maryland.

The Governor?s Office of Crime Control and Prevention will administer the funds and will also collaborate with Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein to identify additional programs aimed at suppressing and preventing gangs, Ehrlich announced Thursday.

“Gang activity is a growing public safety threat in our state,” he said in a statement.

Ehrlich?s pledge follows one Wednesday by Rosenstein, who awarded $1.5 million in federal anti-gang grants to local jurisdictions and organizations in Maryland.

Authorities also announced that a new statewide law-enforcement database called Gang-Net will be implemented in Maryland in 2007.
