President Trump on Thursday said Republicans will see a “red wave” in the fall midterm elections because Americans are tired of the Democrats’ attitude toward immigration.
“Every time we ask for resources, the Democrats say no. They say no to everything. They’re obstructionists. They think it’s good politically, I think it’s bad politically. We’ll see,” Trump told reporters during a meeting with his Cabinet.
“They have no policies that are any good. They’re not good politicians. All they’re good at doing is obstructing,” he said, adding, “I think we’re going to have a red wave, not a blue wave.”
A day after he signed an executive order to end his administration’s practice of separating undocumented families at the border, Trump said congressional Democrats have refused to help him do more to close immigration loopholes and protect children of illegal immigrants.
“They were sent up here with human traffickers because of the Democrat-supported policies that have allowed this to happen,” Trump said, claiming his political opponents “created a massive child smuggler industry.”
“Now they want us to take care of the minors. That’s fine, but they don’t want to give us the money to take care of them,” he said.
The president also accused Democrats of having unrealistic expectations for the facilities in which unaccompanied minors and other children are being housed after crossing illegally into the United States.
“‘Let’s run the most luxurious hotel in the world for everybody,'” he said mockingly, adding that Democrats “don’t want to approve anything because they think it’s bad probably for the election coming up.”
“Unfortunately, there’s a lot of people suffering and that’s unfortunate,” Trump told his Cabinet.
