Theme Auditions for ‘Cupcake Cabaret’ at the Red Palace, Sunday
It’ll be part burlesque performance, part high-wire act.
On Sunday, five accomplished D.C.-area burlesque performers will compete for one of three lead roles in the new show “Cupcake Cabaret: A History of ‘Bad’ Women.” The 45-minute production, a multimedia exploration of the history of burlesque and its influence on today’s performers, will debut at this year’s Capital Fringe Festival.
“It’s very interesting and exciting letting someone else pick who is going to be my cast,” said Pamela Nash of 4&9 Productions. Nash is the creator of “Cupcake Cabaret.”
Last week, seven performers competed at the Red Palace, and five qualified to move on to the second round. Nash gave each candidate a phrase representing a scene from “Cupcake Cabaret,” but did not tell them what exactly the phrase pertains to. The performer then had just one week to prepare an act reflecting that phrase.
“A week is a high-stakes challenge for these women,” Nash said. “It’s almost a naked process.”
The Red Palace audience will select the three finalists for three of the four primary roles in “Cupcake Cabaret.” Performers will need to demonstrate not only burlesque and dance moves, but improvisational skills as well.
“No matter who is cast, we’re going to have a really good show,” Nash said.
