UDC’s swanky green digs

The University of the District of Columbia plans to break ground Wednesday on the nation’s first LEED Platinum certified student center — the greenest of green building standards — in a ceremony led by Mayor Vincent Gray. The $40 million facility is part of the historic and comprehensive renovation of the District’s only public university.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at 4200 Connecticut Ave. NW.

The building will feature a green roof, a rain garden and bio-retention facilities that will mitigate the amount of water used and monitor the quality of water retained, according to a UDC press release. Michael Marshall, architect of Marshall Moya Design, partnered with Cannon Design for the student center.

“The UDC Student Center will serve as a model for campuses across the country,” Marshall said.
