Virginia Railway Express riders have a chance to weigh in during the next few weeks on a proposal to raise their fares by 3 percent.
The commuter train service is hosting seven public hearings around the region about its plan to raise fares starting in July. The first hearing starts Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Fredericksburg.
VRE officials have said they need to raise fares because the service is facing rising costs and needs to offset forecasted cuts to its state and federal funding to cover its proposed $88.7 million budget.
Those who cannot attend the hearings can submit written comments until April 6, by email at [email protected], by fax to 703-684-1313 or mail, ATTN: Anna Gotthardt, 1500 King Street, Suite 202, Alexandria, Virginia 22314.
