Canada’s top two newspapers are slamming Trump as a bully after he reamed out Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for complaining about U.S. tariffs in public.
Trump left the G-7 meeting in Canada fuming at Trudeau, and called him “dishonest” and “weak” for saying Canada would retaliate against the U.S.
Canada’s major newspapers responded by saying Trump is a bully who deserved it.
“What the vain and delicate Mr. Trump apparently expected Mr. Trudeau to say was that the summit was a success due entirely to the president’s generous participation, and that a grateful, moist-eyed Canada would no longer retaliate against his unjustified tariffs,” wrote the Globe and Mail, the country’s largest paper.
“We are a polite people, but the president will learn that, when roused, we don’t roll over at the request of an insulting bully, no matter how big,” the paper added.
The same op-ed from the paper’s editorial board rejected the “blatant duplicity” of Trump’s remarks, and said it was even worse than when President George W. Bush “invented weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.”
The nation’s second largest paper, the Toronto Star, agreed that Trump was being a bully.
“It was both dishonest and amateurish,” the Star said. “Trump accused Canada and the other G7 allies of imposing ‘unacceptable’ tariffs on American goods.”
“But in the meantime, this rogue president is wreaking a lot of damage and threatens to do even more before he’s finished,” it added. “Canada and its allies must stand firm; by now it’s all too clear that making nice with the bully just invites more abuse.”
