Two shot outside funeral for man slain April 11

Mourners grieving a man slain on Baltimore?s streets were greeted by more violence Monday ? when two others were shot and one killed outside the funeral.

Multiple gunshots rang out at 12:15 p.m. outside Unity United Methodist Church at Edmondson Avenue and Stricker Street in West Baltimore, police said.

Police found two adult males wounded, one lying in the middle of the street and the other in the passenger seat of a white Acura, said Baltimore police spokesman Donny Moses.

The man in the Acura was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Moses said.

The other man was in serious condition Monday afternoon.

Police did not release either man?s name.

The mourners had gathered to honor Anthony Izzard, 25, who was shot to death earlier this month.

Bishop Napolean Rush said the violence sent people running inside the church.

“As we were halfway through the sermon, people were beginning to run: I guess two, three hundred people were beginning to run on the inside of the church,” he said.

Moses said detectives are investigating whether the incident was gang-related.

He said investigators also are looking into whether the shooting was connected to Izzard?s slaying. Izzard was one of three men shot April 11 at West Lexington and North Mount streets.

Police have made no arrests in either case.

The homicide is the 60th of the year, compared with 80 during the same time period last year.
