Maryland’s Emergency Medical Service Board on Tuesday reviewed preliminary recommendations from an expert panel that reviewed the state’s medevac system last month.
Several panelists during last month’s two-day meeting suggested Maryland has too many helicopters, but panel chairman Robert MacKersie told board members the final report expected in mid-January will simply suggest analyzing the fleet size.

“Quite honestly, a couple of us cringed when the remark was made that Maryland has too many helicopters,” said MacKersie, trauma director at San Francisco General Hospital. “It was not representative of the conclusions of the panel.”
The EMS board will use the final report to consider any changes to the medevac system. The panel was convened in response to a crash of a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter in September that killed four people.
