Bob Henig shows two novice bikers the ropes

When it comes to fundraising, Bob Henig of Bob’s BMW in Jessup knows how to rev up enthusiasm.

Henig is a top fundraiser for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and the Ride for Kids program.

“I … stumbled upon the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation,” said Henig. “To say that I was impressed with what I saw was an understatement.”

The Foundation is a charity that supports medical research dedicated to finding the cause and cure for childhood brain tumors. It is supported by dozens of “Ride for Kids” events including one last weekend sponsored by Henig that raised more than $270,000.

Those in the Foundation said Henig is an important part of the organization.

“[Henig] is an extraordinary man who has mobilized the motorcycling masses to support our work, and we are eternally grateful to him. He has had a positive effect on countless young brain tumor patients and their families, and the effects of his work will be felt for decades,” said Kyle Clack, National Director for the Ride for Kids.

Now in his 13th year of partnering with the foundation, Henig wanted to outdo his past fundraising successes.

Thus, he and his staff orchestrated the Ultimate Bike Raffle. The Grand Prize, valued at $19,000, allows one winner to choose from one of three new BMW bikes, including the F800ST, F800GS or F800S. The package includes one bike whose base price is approximately $12,000 plus $1,500 worth of riding gear and another $1,500 worth of accessories.

Depending upon the winner’s own experience, that person can pick from a beginner’s course or an advanced course intended to develop riding skills. If the person who wins doesn’t wish to drive the bike home, transportation and delivery are available.

“Clubs have picked up on it, other magazines picked up on it, Speed TV has picked up on it. Each time that happens, a few more people pick up on it, a few more people learn about it, and it keeps rolling along,” said Henig.

Hecker is one person who is glad she learned about the raffle and Oct. 4 drawing.

“It’s clear that Bob holds this charity in high regard and his belief in it rubs off on many of those around him,” said Lisa Hecker, a customer and Crofton resident. “Even if I don’t win the bike or a prize, the kids win with every dollar donated.”
