Dem Primary Poll: Hillary Drops 10 Points

A new national poll of Democrats and Democrat leaners finds Hillary Clinton with 42 percent support in her party’s presidential primary, down 10 points from a month ago and facing significant opposition from other candidates. The Monmouth University poll found Clinton, the former secretary of state, fell from 52 percent support last month, the first time she has failed to get a majority of Democrats in Monmouth’s poll.

Behind Clinton are Vice President Joe Biden, with 22 percent, and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders at 20 percent. Biden is not yet a declared candidate.

Both Clinton and Biden have high favorability ratings among Democrats—71 percent say they have favorable opinions of both politicians. But Clinton’s unfavorable rating, 17 percent, is nearly double Biden’s at 9 percent.

How would Democratic primary voters greet a Biden candidacy? In addition to the 22 percent who say they already support him, a combined 41 percent say they are very likely or somewhat likely to consider supporting the vice president.

According to the Real Clear Politics average of national polls, Clinton has just under a 25-point lead over Sanders and Biden.
