Mitch McConnell is the most unpopular US senator: Poll

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is America’s most unpopular senator, according to a nationwide poll of voters.

The Morning Consult poll found that the Kentucky Republican has 50% disapproval among his constituents, compared to 36% who approve.

Trailing him for second is Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who received some backlash in her reliably blue state of Maine for voting to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh. 48% of voters there disapprove of her and 45% approve.

Democrat Bob Menendez of New Jersey, who once faced corruption charges that were later dropped, rounds out the three most unpopular senators, with 42% disapproval and 34% approval.

The most popular of the lot is independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, who carries a 62% approval with voters and 28% disapproval. Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is running for the Democratic nomination for president, has 62% approval and 32% disapproval. The third-most popular senator is Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont with 61% approval compared to 24% disapproval.

The polling group surveyed 487,624 registered U.S. voters from April 1 through June 30 to determine the rankings. Margin of error varied by senator.
