Shooting at Norway mosque leaves one injured

A Saturday morning shooting at the al-Noor Islamic Centre near Oslo, Norway, has left one man injured and another man in custody.

Authorities described the assailant as “a young white man” but have not further identified him. Witnesses say he broke through the glass door of the mosque and opened fire into the congregation, leaving one 75-year-old man injured.

“The man carried two shotgun-like weapons and a pistol,” said mosque director Irfan Mushtaq to local news channel TV2. “He broke through a glass door and fired shots.”

Mushtaq also described the man as having been dressed in protective gear and a helmet and indicated that he was overpowered by people at the mosque before police arrived.

The al-Noor Islamic Centre is said to have increased security in the time since the mass shooting at a Christchurch, New Zealand, mosque in March, which claimed the lives of 51 people. The perpetrator in that case was said to be an anti-Islamic extremist.

“One person is shot,” Oslo police confirmed on Saturday. “The severity of that person’s injuries is unknown. One suspect is arrested.”

Police believe the suspect acted alone, but no further details have been given at this time.
