“Economic security is a quintessential building block for families in Mount Vernon. I fully support guaranteed income for residents. I’m excited to join a coalition of innovative and forward-thinking mayors who are not afraid to push for critical resources for their community,” said Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.
People who are residents of the town, are at least 18 years old, make at least $15,000 a year, and have an income “at or below 80% percent of the CDBG Annual Income Limit” are eligible for the monthly payments, according to the city. “CDBG” is the Community Development Block Grant under the Housing and Urban Development Department. The annual income limits are set by HUD to cap what incomes are considered low-income and eligible for assistance programs funded by CDBG.
Applications for the program opened July 20. The pilot program will randomly select eligible residents who submit an application by the deadline. The total payments will amount to $6,000, divided into $500 payments over 12 months.
