Top official at Washington National Cathedral: Trump’s ‘shithole’ comment is ‘un-American’

A top official at the Washington National Cathedral strongly condemned President Trump for referring to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “shithole countries,” calling the president’s comments “un-American.”

“Let me be perfectly clear,” Dean Randy Hollerith wrote Friday on Facebook, “the racist thinking behind these comments is vile, corrosive and as un-Christian as it is un-American.”

Hollerith said he has spent time in Haiti and witnessed the strength of Haitians firsthand.

“They have suffered more than many of us could ever imagine and yet they still seek to create a better life for themselves and their country,” he wrote.

Hollerith called on Americans to be “better” than Trump’s controversial remarks and to demand “better” from the nation’s leaders.

“It is important to say that as Americans, we are better than this. We are better than the racist generalizations of these comments. We deserve more from our national leadership and we should demand better,” the Facebook post continued.

He ended the post by asking Americans to pray that God will “soften” Trump’s heart.
