President Trump’s 2020 campaign released a statement touting the historically low African-American unemployment and prison reform initiatives his administration is pursuing in celebration of Juneteenth, “the anniversary of the liberation of black Americans from slavery in 1865.”
Trump campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson stated opened by highlighting some of “the great contributions by African Americans to our nation since then.”
“President Trump is proudly honoring this legacy, from his prison reform policies, to the recent pardons of African Americans unjustly punished, to economic policies that are helping fuel job growth and the lowest African American unemployment on record,” she continued. “We at Team Trump are humbled by the great sacrifices of African Americans that have helped us become a better nation as we continue to Make America Great Again.”
In June, black unemployment fell to its lowest mark, 5.9 percent, since the government started tracking the metric in 1972.
Overall unemployment has also fallen under Trump, reaching its lowest point in more than 40 years.
President Trump has in recent weeks issued a string of pardons and commuted sentences, including a posthumous pardon for former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson and a commuted sentence for Alice Johnson, who was sentenced to life in prison for one nonviolent drug offense.
