President Trump’s tweets may soon be evaluated by a team of legal minds before being published on social media.
A group of lawyers would read each post and decide whether it needs to be edited or completely shut down, according to a report.
The communications and legal offices want to create a system so that tweets “don’t go from the president’s mind out to the universe,” an aide with knowledge of the plan told the Wall Street Journal on Friday.
The move is an attempt to keep Trump’s often controversial statements down to a minimum. Trump has alleged via Twitter that former President Barack Obama spied on his campaign and hurled insults at political enemies — tweets that have shifted the political conversation from policy news to constant reaction and analysis of the president’s outbursts.
White House aides reportedly organized an official Twitter “intervention” a few weeks ago in an attempt to explain to Trump why his around-the-clock and sometimes baseless tweets could be damaging.
The pre-tweeting legal team could be implemented in the days following Trump’s return to Washington this week.
