WASHINGTON (AP) — The District of Columbia businessman suspected of funding a “shadow campaign” for Mayor Vincent Gray has left the accounting firm he founded.
A spokeswoman for the firm says Jeffrey Thompson has sold his stake to partner Ralph Bazilio. The company has also changed its name. Long known as Thompson, Cobb, Bazilio and Associates, it is now Bazilio Cobb Associates.
Spokeswoman Barbara Hutto declined to provide details of the sale or what led Thompson to leave the firm.
This week, a Gray campaign aide pleaded guilty to conspiring with an unnamed businessman who supplied $650,000 in illicit funds to Gray’s campaign. Two people with knowledge of the investigation have identified that businessman as Thompson. The individuals spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information.
