House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the State of the Union may not go on as originally planned next week, despite the expectation that the federal government will reopen as soon as Friday evening.
“The State of the Union is not planned now,” the California Democrat told reporters Friday after President Trump’s announcement that a deal had been reached to reopen the government.

Pelosi and Trump had been in a tit-for-tat standoff over whether the State of the Union, originally scheduled for Jan. 29, would take place.
Earlier this month, Pelosi told Trump the address to Congress should not happen in person while the government was partially shut down, citing security concerns. The Trump administration pushed back, saying it would still be able to ensure the safety of U.S. officials during the event. The impasse ended Wednesday when Trump agreed not to give the speech during the shutdown.
Pelosi appeared to say Friday that a new date would need to be agreed upon.
“What I said to the president is when government is open, we will discuss a mutually agreeable date, and I’ll look forward to doing that and welcoming the president to the House of Representatives for the State of the Union, when we agree on that mutually,” Pelosi said.
