Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot is paying more than $450,000 to families who are owed the money, thanks to a new law that helps the state identify overdue payments.
More than 1,250 child support accounts will receive payments from the state’s unclaimed property fund, according to Franchot’s office.
Franchot identified the overdue payments by cross-checking unclaimed property accounts with the Department of Human Resources’ database of child support payers.
This marks the first time Franchot has had access to the DHR database, thanks to a law the Maryland General Assembly passed in April.
