German animal park gives new name to pig named Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin is no longer hogtied.

A purebred Russian pig living in a German animal park was renamed from Putin to Eberhofer during a ceremony on Tuesday.

Eckard Mickish, the operator of the Bavarian park, said he renamed the pig due to the war between Russia and Ukraine and was worried about how Ukrainian visitors would feel, according to Reuters. Eberhofer was rebranded in a ceremony that included a marzipan and biscuit cake decorated with five pig figures to celebrate the occasion.

The pig received his new name after the park asked social media users for help. The park received about 2,700 suggestions, with Eberhofer, the name of a policeman from a popular Bavarian book series, winning the vote.

Mickish said he originally named the pig after the Russian leader in 2019 since it had been bred from pure-race boars from Russia. At 441 pounds, the pig weighs around three times as much as those typically found in Germany, he said.

In March, a group of protesters unofficially renamed the street where the Russian Embassy is located in Washington, D.C., to “President Zelensky Way” in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February.
