An Illinois resident may be the first to die from e-cigarette use.
The patient died of respiratory illness, which he blamed on vaping, although healthcare professionals and scientists have not confirmed that vaping was the cause.
The person who died had reported difficulty breathing and chest pains while being treated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Food and Drug Administration to research possible e-cigarette-related health issues.
In a Friday press call, a CDC representative said at least 22 people from 17 to 38 years of age have been hospitalized after using vaping devices.
“No specific product has been identified in all cases, nor has any product been conclusively linked to illnesses,” the CDC said.
The CDC has not yet released the patient’s name or age to the press.
