The State Department announced they will be cutting foreign aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras after they failed to take proper steps to curb illegal migrants coming to the United States.
State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said they would not continue the aid until the Trump administration saw “concrete actions to reduce the number of illegal migrants coming to the U.S. border” from the three countries.
Ortagus said the U.S. will finish funding current projects but plans to end funding for future projects.
The State Department will work with Congress to reappropriate the funds.
The ending of new foreign aid to Mexico comes as the Trump administration seeks to force Mexico and Central American countries to crack down on illegal immigration.
Mexico and the U.S. recently finished a border agreement to help lower illegal immigration at the U.S. southern border. Mexico’s president said he would sell the previous administration’s “luxurious presidential plane” to help pay for the agreement.
A top immigration analyst said the U.S. is expecting over 1 million illegal immigrants in 2019.
