More than a dozen injured in Chicago pileup involving nearly 60 cars

Almost 60 cars were involved in an early morning pileup in Chicago that ended with 14 people hospitalized.

The wreck happened Wednesday shortly before 6 a.m. on the Kennedy Expressway. The road had become icy because of overnight snowfall. John Giordano with the Chicago Fire Department told ABC 7 that the sheet of ice coupled with speedy drivers resulted in the crash.

“Overnight conditions deteriorated, and we got some snow and icy conditions on the expressway. Vehicles driving at high rates of speed caused the accident,” Giordano explained.

“We are not sure the vehicles that caused it, but it did cause an effect where vehicles couldn’t stop behind them because of the high speeds that they were traveling and thus the amount of vehicles we have at this time,” he added.

A total of 14 people were transported to three different area hospitals, while another 45 were inspected by medical personnel but did need treatment. Fifty-four vehicles were involved in the pileup.

A similar incident in Canada in February left two dead and scores injured after about 200 vehicles were involved in a massive pileup. In December, 63-car pileup in Virginia led to dozens of people being hospitalized.
