Mark Meadows re-elected as Freedom Caucus chairman

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., was re-elected chairman of the House Freedom Caucus on Monday night, ensuring that one of the top allies of President Trump remains atop the conservative group.

Meadows told the Washington Examiner that he will serve in the position for about one more year until December. He completed a two-year term in December last year.

“I will remain as chairman until December to allow for a smoother transition,” Meadows said.

The other lawmakers who were considered for the post were Reps. Scott Perry, R-Pa., and Jody Hice, R-Ga., before Meadows ultimately won out in an unanimous vote to continue leading the roughly three-dozen member caucus.

Meadows was one of the chief proponents of Trump’s recent push for more than $5 billion in border wall funding as part of a government spending deal. Trump ended the shutdown on Friday after 35 days without securing funds for the wall. Lawmakers will now head to a conference to try to hammer out an immigration deal before the Feb. 15 deadline.
