Country music superstar and outspoken LGBTQ activist Kacey Musgraves said she’s excited for the day “we have a gay country music icon” to be a role model for country music fans.
In 2013, Musgraves released “Follow Your Arrow,” which has become known as a “queer country anthem” for encouraging listeners to “kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls, if that’s what you’re into.” Since releasing the hit, she has played at Pride festivals and charity events for LGBTQ organizations.
However, Musgraves told the Huffington Post that her activism isn’t enough. She said she keeps “dreaming of the day” a gay country music icon steps on the scene, “especially in these small towns,” where members of the LGBTQ community are “terrified of being themselves.”
“If we had someone who could be that voice, a first-person account of that voice in our genre,” she said, “I think it could be a really powerful thing.”
Former Arkansas Gov. and Fox News commentator Mike Huckabee recently resigned from the Country Music Association’s board of directors after one day amid backlash from country music insiders and musicians over his views on gay rights and support for the National Rifle Association.
