White House unveils updated Rose Garden

The White House Rose Garden has gotten a face-lift.

The updated outdoor space was unveiled on Saturday. It has been under renovation for three weeks.

Pastel flowers fill the area, and white roses in honor of the first papal visit to the White House by Pope John Paul II in 1979 have been added.

The president and first lady are set to host a reception “celebrating the White House Rose Garden” at 7 p.m. The White House says the project was paid for with private donations but declined to say how much it cost.

The garden will be the backdrop for Melania Trump’s Republican National Convention speech on Thursday, a controversial move, given that the White House traditionally is not used for overtly partisan events.
