Soderman is father of two boys who attend the Capitol Hill Cluster School and one of the organizers of the Capitol Hill Classic. The running event takes place May 20. For those who don’t know, what is the Capitol Hill Classic?
The Capitol Hill Classic is a 10k, 3k and fun run that is sponsored by the Capitol Hill Cluster School PTA. All of the proceeds minus our expenses goes back into the PTA, which then goes back into the classrooms.
How did you get involved in the event?
I volunteered last year. I was active as a rep in the PTA for my son’s school and I knew that the gentleman who had been running the classic for the last four or five years — basically it was time to move on, it was time to have someone else do it. So myself and another parent … decided to keep this event going and take on the task of organizing.
How does the event benefit the Capitol Hill Cluster School?
The event benefits the Capitol Hill Cluster School by it being its major fundraiser. We then take the money that we raise as far as being a nonprofit and through the course of the year we provide the teachers with money … they can use for extra classroom supplies; we provide field trip support for all three of the campuses; and we also in years past as well as this year provide grant money … so all of the teachers are able to submit grant [requests], which allow them for extras.
How can people get involved?
They can get involved by running the race, which you can find as far as registry information on our website, which is www.capitolhillclassic.com. They can help also sponsor [a child so he or she can run].
