The Trump administration debuted a website that it says will serve as a “one-stop shop” for information parents, students, and educators can use to enhance safety at schools nationwide.
“All students deserve a safe learning environment, and the Federal School Safety Clearinghouse is an essential resource for information and best practices,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, chairwoman of the Federal Commission on School Safety, said in a statement. “Because every school community has its own unique needs, SchoolSafety.gov equips decision makers with resources for developing, customizing, and implementing actionable school safety plans.”
The Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Justice launched the site Monday to commemorate the second anniversary this week of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
“School safety is the number one priority of parents across the country, which is why the President directed DHS and other federal agencies to form a taskforce and provide schools, teachers, parents, and law enforcement with resources to identify, prepare for, respond to, and mitigate threats,“ acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf said in a statement.
The website hosts information on emergency planning, threat assessments, physical security, mental health services in schools, and more.
Fourteen students were killed at the Parkland shooting on Feb. 14, 2018. In March 2018, President Trump created a commission to come up with a plan to improve safety at schools. Last February, Democrats in Congress renewed calls for laws that make it more difficult for people to obtain guns, saying it would prevent dangerous people from obstaining them.
