Nearly half of people who voted for President Trump in last year’s election believe he won the popular vote, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Wednesday.
The July 20-24 survey found 49 percent of Trump voters think the president received more votes in the election, even though Hillary Clinton won almost 3 million more votes than Trump.
Trump received 62,984,825 votes compared to Clinton’s 65,853,516 votes, according to the final tally.
Exactly 47 percent of Republicans and 12 percent of Democrats believe Trump won the popular vote.
That misunderstanding may be due to Trump’s insistence that millions of illegal immigrants voted and cost him the popular vote.
Voters were also confused about who won the electoral college. Trump passed the 270-threshold on election night and captured 306 compared to Clinton’s 232.
But more than eight months after the election, 24 percent of Democrats and 8 percent of Republicans believe Clinton won the electoral college.
The online poll was conducted with 3,981 registered voters and had a 2 percentage point margin of error.
