Kanye West nets 2% support in new presidential poll

Kanye West’s outsider bid for president is showing signs of life after a national poll recorded his campaign garnering 2% support among likely voters.

A Politico-Morning Consult poll of 1,983 likely voters conducted between Aug. 9 and 10 and released Wednesday found that West, who continues to file ballot petitions in states across the country, could possibly influence the outcome of the race between President Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden on election night.

The poll, which was conducted before California Sen. Kamala Harris was announced as Biden’s vice-presidential pick on Tuesday, found that West polled highest with the Generation Z demographic, registering 6% support.

West will appear on the Oklahoma presidential ballot and has submitted paperwork in a number of other key battleground states, including his home state of Illinois. Some of his submissions have been challenged by local officials, and West’s campaign withdrew his name from the New Jersey ballot after rows of signatures were called into question by a former Democratic congressional candidate.

The rapper-turned-presidential candidate drew criticism for controversial remarks he made about Harriet Tubman during a July campaign rally in South Carolina. He was also accused of suffering a mental health crisis after he cried on stage while recounting how he considered aborting his first daughter.

The poll found that Biden is leading Trump by 9 points, with 9% of respondents claiming they have “no opinion” on the race.
